Increase Light Output By Pulsing LEDs at Low Duty Factors and High Peak Currents

Pulse Modulated Lighting

Allowable Forward Pulse Current vs Duty RationThe advantage of pulse modulated lighting is the reduction in the LEDs power dissipation, thus prolonging the life of the battery or increase the perceived brightness. The increased efficiency or brightness depends on the LED material. Light output for GaP and AlGaAs can be higher with pulse drive than with DC current. However, AlInGaP LEDs do not show such increase in efficiency.

Permissible pulse forward current varies depending on LED material, packaging and driving conditions, therefore you should follow the specifications characteristics diagram (example illustrated below) or absolute max rating chart.

Absolute maximum ratings at Ta=25°C
Reverse voltage 5.0V
D.C. forward current 30 mA
Pulse current (1/10 duty cylce, 0.1 ms pulse worth) 100ma
Operating temperature range -25° to +85°
