Product Information

Our Multi-chip and multi-wavelength Emitters combine several LED chips in the same package to reduce overall component size. LEDs with different wavelengths can be placed in the package for applications such as colorimetry, spectrometry, medical diagnostics (oximetry, co-oximetry, photoplethysmography (PPG), optical coherence tomography (OCT), urinalysis, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)), fluorescence, and currency validation. Multichip emitters are also used for high-reliability indicators, switch backlighting, and panel illumination.

The Marktech multichip LED series is available in various colors with polarized and non-polarized configurations for AC or DC operation. These low-profile emitters contain multiple, evenly spaced chips, combining for a consistent, wide-illuminated light pattern while consuming little power.

Several LED dies, or chips with the same wavelength can be packaged together for higher power output applications. Multiple LED chip products come in various package types, including TO-18, PLCC, TO-5, and surface mount. These devices hold anywhere from 2 to 7 die and are available in our selected standard chips in UV through SWIR Short Wave Infrared ranges. The LEDs can be modified to the customer’s specifications, which includes power and wavelength sorting. InGaAs and silicon photodiodes can also be added into the package to provide both a light source and detection, which is especially useful for spectroscopy and biomarker sensing applications.

The Marktech hermetically sealed metal can multichip LED series offers high-output, low-profile emitters that contain multiple, evenly spaced chips, ideal for applications requiring the same emission sources in a small, densely packaged area.

In applications with more than seven LEDs needing to be densely packed, Marktech has chip-on-board (COB) solutions where multiple LED dies are directly placed into a small amount of space on a printed circuit board (PCB). COB offers many advantages compared to standard packaging. LEDs and electronic components are heat sensitive, so metal-cored boards are utilized where dense packing raises concerns about overheating devices.

While widely used in LED illumination applications, COB technology can significantly enhance emission and detection functions in sensing applications. Detectors can be soldered directly onto a printed circuit board with or without LED emitters. Packing more light emission or light detection chips into an area can enhance circuit and design performance in many applications.

Multiple wavelength LEDs can eliminate these components in particular applications.
  • Integrated Photodiode Detectors: Enhancing functionality, including photodiode detectors within the package, allows for real-time monitoring and feedback, which is critical for precision-dependent applications.
  • Hermetic Packaging: Ensuring long-term reliability and performance, the airtight packaging protects photonic devices from environmental threats while maintaining a compact form factor.
  • Cost-Effective and Design-Simplifying: By combining multiple functionalities into one unit, our emitters reduce overall component costs and simplify the design process, making them an economical choice for advanced applications.
  • Improved SWaP: As electronic products evolve technologically and the push for miniaturization continues, space constraints for electronics remain a significant concern for design engineers. Our multiple wavelength devices provide improved size, weight, and power (SWaP) characteristics.
  • Broad Spectral Emission: Several LEDs (e.g., RGB and single wavelength LEDs) can be combined to simulate the broad spectrum of incandescent, xenon, fluorescent, or mercury vapor lamps while providing a light source with longer life.
  • Integral Monitoring / Detection: Silicon, InGaAs, and SiC photodiodes can be included in the same package. When invisible LEDs are utilized, an integral photodiode can act as a monitoring photodiode. Monitor the photodiode, indicating whether or not the LEDs are emitting. In reflective applications, the integral photodiode can be used to detect the amount of absorbance or reflection from a material or sample.

Applications

  • Non-Dispersive Spectroscopy: Ideal for applications requiring the simultaneous analysis of multiple wavelengths without dispersion, enabling efficient and accurate spectral analysis. Non-dispersive IR or UV spectroscopy (NDIR / NDUV) methods are often the foundation of sensing biomarkers in wearables or chemical composition in gas analyzers.
  • Medical Diagnostics: With specific wavelengths tailored for oximetry and co-oximetry, our emitters facilitate non-invasive monitoring of blood oxygen levels and the differentiation of hemoglobin forms, crucial for critical care and diagnostics.
  • Fluorescence: These emitters' ability to excite materials at one wavelength and detect the emitted fluorescence at another makes them perfect for biochemical, medical, and scientific research.
  • Multi-Parameter Water Quality Colorimeters: Our emitters provide the necessary spectral diversity and enable the accurate measurement of different colors and intensities, which is essential for quality control, research, and development in various industries.
  • Medical / Bio-illumination: Human tissues, diseased organs, and cancerous regions absorb or reflect light differently across the spectrum. Multiple wavelength light sources allow medical professionals to diagnose conditions incredibly quickly and accurately. Retina imaging or fundus cameras are diagnostic instruments that utilize numerous colors or wavelengths during imaging.
